Chicago! Velvet Revolution is starting off strong for 2013! The revolution will be flooding the artistic minds of Beauty Bar Thursday, January 3rd! Every month we’re growing stronger, bringing in the curios and corrupting their average minds with artistry that goes beyond the canvassed limits. Leave your inhibitions at the door and allow the revolution to take hold, pulling you through the tantalization of the mixed media artistry. The night will begin with music crawling out of the speakers, climbing into the bodies of every Velvet Revolutionist entering through the doors. Witness artists as they shock life into their creations until it pushes off the canvas and seeps into your pores. As the night progresses, music will start to course through bloodstreams acting as the beating heart of every dancing body in the room.

Josh Harrell from Midway Strangers will be pumping the blood flow with “chunky, funky bass” making it hard for you revolutionists to keep your liquids in your glasses! Intertwining the music genres, Cachet will be back with her signature deep body bass! The music won’t be the only thing dropping to the floor once your body starts heating up from all that musical tension!

For one night of mayhem, the Infusion Project is showcasing DJ Schugar, the man behind the project of infusion, and two of your very own KC! – Gent and JT Quick. But wait, theeere’s mooore! The duo Gent and JT Quick have come together to fuse Projekt-X and introduce to you what “uncomfortable amounts of energy” feels like vibrating your insides. Not to mention, Schugar’s subconscious talent to raise your body frames and bounce them ‘til the muscles holding them up turn into mush. While your ears are getting the attention they need, your eyes will be fixated on the visual performances of Eric Evenson doing it up live all night.

The Infusion Project couldnt be more excited to have this Producer/DJ get on the decks. Honing his skills in the studio and on the decks for just a short time, MKZ has an arsenal of hard hitting tunes under his belt.

Mkz or simply known as Mikey began his production work in the year 2009 after attending his first electronic music festival in Los Angeles,California, were he fell in love with the synthetic sounds that surrounded him.

In 2009-2010 Mkz was making Electro beats, however his passion for Minimal and Techno took over. The year is now 2012 and he has had various releases on labels such as 2MR2, Digital storm and Frontzide records.

The future looks bright for the 22 year old San Diego native as he does not plan on stopping his production work any time soon.

“MKZ’s style of straightforward minimal techno has made him one of my favorite producers in San Diego’s Techno scene. I’ve heard his sound progress in just a few short months. Techno heads, pay attention.” says DJ Schugar.

Southern California’s lifestyle is synonymous with sunshine, music, art, parties, beautiful people, and outdoor activities. Three of the biggest and best known entertainment companies, McFarlane Promotion, Inc., RMD Group, and Eventvibe.com have joined forces to bring you the ultimate party this Labor Day Weekend! The first annual SoCAL Music Festival will bring the Southern California lifestyle to the streets of Downtown San Diego’s East Village. On September 1, 2012, this all-day festival will include 4 music stages featuring DJ’s and live bands as well as interactive art exhibits displayed throughout the streets. The festival will go from 2pm until midnight and will be expanded across five blocks between 9thAve and Park Blvd.

Brew Down @ Passion House Coffee Roasters 7.12.2012

So you may have heard that Thursday July 12th at 7pm we and Ipsento are hosting a Brew Down. It will be at our warehouse at 2021 W. Fulton St., cross street is Damen Ave. If you would like to enter please email Shannon (at) PassionHouseCoffee (dot) com.

Here are the rules:

1. $10 to enter. Max 20 people. Winner takes the jackpot of $200! Plus maybe something else!

2.The method is v60. (equipment and coffee will be provided)

3. Everyone will cup the coffee we are using and you have 1 shot to dial it in! There will be grind samples to look at to help dial in your coffee.

4. You will brew 1-12oz cup of coffee and then split it for 3 judges. A runner will present the coffee to the judges.

5. There will be 4 groups of 5 competing at a time and the top 4 compete for the top spot.

6. Judges will be separate from the competitors to ensure impartiality.

So basically, get to practicing and come out! We have pro and home brewistas competing so put your name in the running!

Our latest Podcast Mix comes from local DJ Duo Boys Don’t Disco. These gentlemen have been bringin their sound to the Lovelife parties throughout San Diego for the last year. These Boys claim they don’t Disco, but maybe it’s because they’ve finally grown up into men. Either way, they will get you groovin!

DJs and childhood friends Alex and Jeremiah bonded over an obsession of music as teenagers. They make house music, or what can loosely be described as such. Really, it’s the result of countless hours spent devouring their record collections, learning secrets about music inside and out: soul, funk, disco, house and more.

It’s music made for 3am speakers and people that just wanna get down on the floor, where atmosphere is everything. The end result simply creates a lasting connection and a sense of timelessness.

M A N I K Bio:

Great things happen when opportunity and preparation come together at the same time. Summer 2011 has been just that moment for M A N I K (don’t forget those spaces between the letters) as his name and music exploded into the popular consciousness.

Having arrived on the scene right at the point that a new wave of similarly talented east coast producers turned all our attention toward the United States, M A N I K proceeded to drop a tide of killer 12” singles in the last few years, before his debut album arrived on Ovum in May 2011. DJ Mag commented that he is “a purveyor of his own breed of out-of-the-box house” but this tells only part of the story as the hometown-inspired LP ‘Armies of the Night’ touches not only on house but funk, nu disco, acid and electronica – leaving a hard to categorise milestone of a record that stands the young New Yorker out as one of the breakthrough acts of the current era.

Equally huge strides were taken as a touring act, with M A N I K completing three fully-booked European club tours. Over 20 club dates were played across Europe alone, including the UK, Russia, mainland Spain, Germany, Ireland, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and France. He also undertook his first performances in Ibiza at Space, Zoo Project and Sankeys as well as making inroads into the festival circuit with appearances at the huge Tomorrowland and Dance Valley events with the Ovum crew. People back home weren’t slow to catch on either as he criss-crossed the North American continent for the first time playing the likes of Electric Pickle, Miami; Verboten NYC, Smart Bar, Chicago; Life in Washington, D.C; the Standard rooftop in LA and many more besides. This ultimately brought in a nomination as one of the United States’ top DJs of 2011.

Billa has been a musician on many different levels from his earliest years growing up in the Northeast suburbs of Philadelphia as well as attending The Philadelphia School of Performing Arts for school as a young-in. He started off exploring rhythm in various ways as a drummer and a keyboardist for a handful of various indie bands through the 80′s and 90′s, while continuing this rhythm exploration on turn tables after being introduced to this art-form in 91′. Playing now for almost two decades with various styles and genres of being a musical collecting ” vinyl” extraordinaire with a strong love from disco, house, dub, experimental electronica and early post punk inspired visions of dimensional sound he has been lucky to play at clubs across the globe including a 2-year residency at Radost FX in Prague, CZ, and appearances at nites and residencies up & down the east coast , the great south & north west, as well as various adventures throughout California. As a seasoned DJ, he has had the chances along with the honer to set, headline and share the stage for a plethora of well known producers and DJ’s from the likes of Derrick Carter, Derrick May, Mark Farina, The Wicked Crew, Doc Martin, Miles Meada, Mark e Quark, to name a few. He also has been responsible for being the creator, promoter and a strong mind behind the infamous “The Good The Bad and The Funky” and “The Rhythmic Soul Lounge” events for years in New Mexico which catered to a handful musical tastes, genera’s and adventures in spectrum’s of sound. He has recently re-located to the San Diego area where he has had few great appearances with the Moonshake crew nites as well as the Soul On Beat production teams and a soon upcoming eve with “Skin Tight” . He is also now holding a Bi-monthly residency for the Burlap & Searsucker establishments where he gets too tune-in and lay down his beloved as well Balearic adventures! So tune in and let your thoughts wander on this more tech-heady energy journey of late…

A huge thanks to our last podcaster, Adam Warped! This episode we have a feature that has been a long time coming. James Curry is pretty busy these days playing around SoCal. His sound is distinct and the people love what he does. Check it out! Jame Curry aka Lucky J.

My love for electronic dance music was born in the Los Angeles underground but was refined by my time in San Diego. Long before becoming a DJ, I was a student of the history of electronic dance music. It is that history that provides the foundation for my selections as a dj. I am a self proclaimed house head but I often find myself explaining to people that my evil twin loves techno. While I was certainly exposed to techno early on, it wasn’t until I experienced Chris Liebing at a Droid Behavior party that my evil twin was truly born. In 2011 I founded Interconnected and put together my first events with Raiz (Droid Behavior), Android Cartel (Sketchbook, Riff Raff), Halo (Surface, Lost N Sound), and Paul Najera (VivaLaTech) to name a few. I look to continue down the path of djing and creating events in 2012. This mix covers a fairly broad spectrum of house and techno. I hope that you enjoy the selections. Ultimately all credit is due to the original artists. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

Droog Bio:

DROOG is the DJ collective of Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe. From their start 6 years ago, DROOG has steadily built a reputation as one of the leading purveyors of forward thinking dance music, in Los Angeles and beyond.

The collective have become known for their respected parties that through the years featured leading international house and techno talent, from Magda, Jamie Jones, Steve Bug and Martin Buttrich to Dixon, all four memebers of Visionquest, Nicolas Jaar, Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and beyond. Droog have also masterminded showcase parties at WMC, DEMF, BPM and Sonar festivals. Between 2007 and 2011, Droog had held down a residency at Avalon Hollywood, one of the biggest clubs in the US. At Avalon,they have had the chance to play alongside influences such as Richie Hawtin, Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler, Damian Lazarus, Tiefschwarz, Mr. C, Booka Shade, MANDY, Matthew Dear.

In 2009 the trio made a leap into a new territory by launching an LA-based record label, Culprit, which has built steady momentum with successful releases from Matt Tolfrey & Inxec, Hot Natured, Lee Foss, SECT (Soul Clap, Tanner Ross & Sergio Santos), Subb-an, M A N I K and others and joining the ranks of the leaders of the new school of underground dance music. Having toured the US and Mexico extensively, Droog have since expanded with European and South American shows. In October of 2010, Droog made a Fabric debut and since then have covered the globe, from Moscow to Lima, Ibiza to Costa Rica, Berlin and Paris. Recent new DJ debuts included Brazil, Tunisia and Portugal.

Adam has turned the tables from ‘Formula 660′ in Waikiki, Hawaii to ’Hedonism 3′ in Runaway Bay, Jamaica and almost everywhere in between. His signature smooth blend of obscure forward thinking grooves has won over audiences at countless raves and legendary nightclubs. Since 1993 he has graced the decks at Limelight, Tunnel, Liquids, Groovejet, Shampoo, Speeed, The Raleigh Hotel, The Lunatarium, 111 Minna, Filter 14, Phoenix Landing, Le Souk, The Rickshaw Stop, The W Hotels, 1015 Folsom, Mezzanine SF, Love NYC, and many more.

His debut 12 inch “Left of Center” with production partner ‘Big’ Ben Davidson was released in 1999 on Warped Recordings. The duo’s second project Blown Fuse “Blowdryer Blues” a funky filtered house affair(featuring a remix by Joeski) was recorded in 2000. The duo reunited and returned in 2005 with a remix of HAWKE’s (Gavin Hardkiss) single “Flower Girl”. Originally released on Ditrec Records as a limited edition 12″ vinyl, it is now available digitally(Stompy.com, Beatport, Juno, iTunes, etc.) via Q-Burns Abstract Message’s esteemed label Eighth Dimension Records. Warped Crew’s Deflowered remix was also licensed for a mix cd entitled “Rachdingue Vol. 1″ representing Salvador Dali’s legendary surrealist avant-garde nightclub “Le Rachdingue Discotheque” in Catalonia Vilajuïga, Spain.

In October of 2011 Adam released his first track under the pseudonym Johnny Blackouts “Down The Hatch” on San Francisco label Not So Fast Recordings. His remix of No Soul To Sell’s “Electric Kool-Aid”, for French label Electronic Petz, is due out in February. Other forthcoming projects and releases will appear on Uniform Recordings, Headset Records, Harmonious Discord, and his own imprint Whiskey Pickle.

Originally hatched in Montreal, but currently based in London, DJ’s Anstascia and Vivie-Ann have established their love child globally by proving that they don’t fit the quintessential stereotype. Fueled by their sharp taste-maker instincts and technical flair, Blond:ish has not only charmed the industry masses but set themselves to release on some of the most notable labels around.

In the last few years, Blond:ish has carved out a unique production recipe which focuses on the art of creating music that is organic and multi-dimensional. Provocative basslines contrasted with smooth textures and sticky vocals that blend into a genre of house that rebels against being pigeonholed to any specific category.

Deniz Kurtel’s Bio:

Deniz developed a deep love and connection to the sentiments of electronic music during her studies in the USA. Growing up with constant exposure to art from her mother, an influential art initiator in Turkey, and years of intensive classical piano training left her with a professional work ethic and a passion for art. An accomplished interactive sculptor, she quickly made a name for herself in the experimental art scene combining the use of sophisticated computerized LED arrays and mirrors. Her work has been the centerpiece of countless Wolf + Lamb parties in Brooklyn, and has appeared in various art festivals and exhibitions such as Burningman, Communikey, Horizons, Love’s Secret Domain, and Rabbit Hole.

Lee Foss bio:

Few DJs have made such a dramatic impact on the underground house and techno scene over the last two years as Hot Creations label owner Lee Foss. Described by DJ Mag as “one of the most talented new forces in modern dance music today” and by fellow future house innovators Art Department as their favourite producer, Lee has quickly catapulted himself into dance music’s collective consciousness. Lee and his Hot Natured partner Jamie Jones currently spearhead a whole family of like-minded producers that includes Robert James, Russ Yallop, Richy Ahmed and most recently Danny Daze who are currently re-writing the rulebook of how to make evocative and emotive house music.

Born and raised in Chicago, the birthplace of house, Lee now lives between London and Los Angels. Lee made his name on both sides of the Atlantic playing at clubs like The Standard Rooftop (Lost Angeles), fabric (London), The Marcy Hotel (Brooklyn), Watergate (Berlin), Spybar (Chicago) and DC10 (Ibiza). Lee’s rapid rise to prominence has been as much down to his unified but all-encompassing approach to DJing as it has to his pioneering take nu school house and synth-heavy techno, backed up by a string of hit releases on labels like No 19, Culprit, Wolf+Lamb and his own Hot Creations imprint. His unique sound, born out a lifelong love of classic house, 90s hip hop, 80s electro and Detroit techno, combined with fanatical grassroots support from clubbers in both Europe and North America, made him the highest new entrant in Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJs poll last December, coming in at number 36.

With this many accolades under his belt in such a short space of time, it would be easy for Lee to rest on his laurels but this couldn’t be farther from the case. He’s just about to unleash ‘Forward Motion’ his latest Hot Natured production with Jamie Jones, which was one of the breakout records of Miami this year and is shaping up to be one of the summer’s biggest hits. In addition to this he’s currently in the studio with Jamie Jones and ‘Forward Motion’ vocalist Ali Love putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming Hot Natured debut album, which he’s producing alongside his own debut artist album due out later this year. With plans to turn Hot Natured into a fully formed live act and tour it globally in 2012, this is already shaping up to be a career-defining year for Lee Foss.

A classically trained percussionist and a classically trained selector, Eric Long uses his analog roots in the ever evolving technological environment that is electronic music. A proprietor of strict tech-house and organic techno, Eric exercises musical therapy at the bi-monthly “Jungle”.

As a recent addition to the ever expanding “Cosmic Family”, Eric Long will will bring his definitive groove and infectious rhythm to the Basshenge and events alike.

WOLF+LAMB bio:

For nearly a decade, Wolf + Lamb have faithfully represented an evolving outer edge of dance music. Maintaining the party, while constantly pushing boundaries, the two have cultivated a constantly changing sound based on close-knit family of friends and musicians. Using nothing but two turntables and a steadfast determination to make people move, the duo and their crew have been lighting up dance-floors around the globe. While leaning towards house, the duo and label’s sound encompass nuevo disco, hipster crossover, sex house and even strains country.

The partnership was struck when the two discovered a similar penchant for new and exotic styles of music, aesthetic and the ability to tolerate each other for long periods of time. They immediately set out to spread their vision of community, music and the celebration that ties it all together. Starting with small underground parties in New York’s lower east side, moving to warehouse raves in Williamsburg, and eventually opening their own venue, the Marcy Hotel in 2005, the duo defined a new, more intimate party akin to Mancuso’s Loft or simply a friends’ living room.

2007 saw the start of their first record label, Wolf + Lamb Music. A variety label that has become a launching pad and home for their sound and the likes of Nicolas Jaar, Deniz Kurtel, No Regular Play, Tanner Ross and Soul Clap. More recently seeing the launch of Voices of Black and Double Hill amongst others. With a burgeoning family of artists producing, they have since been launched W+L Black, a bootleg label, and Gadi Mizrahi’s Double Standard imprint publishing original music, edits and everything in between.

After releasing Wolf + Lamb vs. Soul Clap on the legendary DJ Kicks series and the 2 month world tour that followed, the duo have settled into a new wave of production, and while continuing to run their musical empire, have turned their sights to the Wolf + Lamb Experience, a variety show format showcasing the many sides of the family in a live setting.

Bio:

Sexy, funky, soulful, eclectic, techy, deep — all are words that have been used to describe Jesse’s sound — whether he’s DJing or producing music.

Blame Jesse’s music obsession on his father. A huge collector of soul, funk, reggae, Blues, classic rock, and just about anything else for that matter, it was his father who gave Jesse his first records and his love of music. His parents always pushed and nurtured the music bug within him, which resulted in a parade of musical instruments finding their way into Jesse’s hands throughout his childhood.

Circa 1996 Jesse found himself indulging in California’s underground party and rave scene which would expand his music experience even further. Witnessing and seeking out DJ performances from the likes of Doc Martin, Barry Weaver, Tom Middleton, Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster, Sasha & Digweed, and live acts such as Underworld and Orbital, Jesse was drawn towards the pulsing rhythms of electronic music. Shortly thereafter Jesse took to the DJ booth himself by teaming up with promoters along the west coast. From warehouses and massive raves to seedy lounges and clubs, he began honing his craft. His music collection continued to grow exponentially, frequenting record shops across southern California.

Today deep house, disco, downtempo, soul, funk, trip hop and techno are what primarily flow from the DJ mind of Jesse, but now more than ever he is focused on producing. In a relatively short time he has achieved several musical accomplishments that include numerous dance edits, an SDSU student film soundtrack, and original music featured on HGTV’s “House Hunters.” He plans to take his obsession even further, continuing to learn the crafts of studio production and audio engineering. A music lover through and through, he believes there is a fitting soundtrack for almost any moment in time.
